NHL Hockey Betting Odds: Florida Panthers vs Washington Capitals
Tuesday, October 18, 2011
by Frank Martin
The Washington Capitals haven't exactly been dominant, but they are unbeaten through four games for the first time since 1997-98. The Capitals have won two in overtime, one in a shootout and one against the hapless Ottawa Senators.
Washington, despite only one goal from Alex Ovechkin, will try to make it a franchise-record five wins to open the season when the much-improved Florida Panthers come to visit Tuesday night.
Florida is coming off a home-and-home sweep of the Tampa Bay Lightning, including a 7-4 road victory Monday in which they equaled the franchise record for power-play goals in a game with five. The Panthers earned points in four of six games (3-2-1) against Washington last season.

The Capitals have opened as 220-moneyline favorites on SBG Global Sportsbook’s Live NHL Hockey Odds.
Florida Panthers (3-1-0): Kris Versteeg, playing with his fourth team in three seasons, looks comfortable in a Panthers' sweater on the top line with Tomas Fleischmann and Stephen Weiss. Versteeg and Weiss each had two goals and two assists against the Lightning on Monday and have combined for 13 points in the four games. Defenseman Brian Campbell, acquired from Chicago in the off-season, is also off to a good start with seven assists – four Monday. Jacob Markstrom might get his first start in goal. The 21-year old played one game last season.
Washington Capitals (4-0-0): Nicklas Backstrom leads the team with five points (one goal), playing with Ovechkin. The Swede is a minus-two, but has showed signs of life after a tough 2010-11 season. Troy Brouwer has only one goal, but has made quite an impression in his first four games with Washington. Brouwer has 21 hits, which was second in the league going into Monday's games. Tomas Vokoun has played well in goal the last two games after a shaky start against Tampa Bay. Backup Michal Neuvirth has been hampered with a lower-body injury.
1. The Capitals have outscored opponents 12-11 in regulation.
2. Florida has killed off 11 of 12 power plays, giving up its first Monday.
NHL PREDICTION: Capitals 4, Panthers 2. Ovechkin is due to break out and the Panthers are playing their third game in four nights.
